The signal-caller then faced pressure in his own end zone on Dallas' next series, causing the ball to slip out of his throwing hand for a fumble that was immediately recovered for a Philadelphia touchdown.
Amid all those near-misses, however, Prescott was still highly efficient as a passer and ultimately finished with a trio of passing touchdowns, finding tight end Dalton Schultz twice and wideout Cedrick Wilson on a two-yard play on fourth down for his other. Overall, that made for a strong showing for Prescott, who now boasts six touchdowns versus two interceptions and has completed over 75 percent of his passes through three games. After returning from last year's ankle injury, he should have high confidence in his play in Week 4's matchup against an improved Panthers defense. Going into the next game against the Atlanta Falcons, the Cowboys learned that they would be without running back Ezekiel Elliott for a six-game suspension, putting more pressure on Prescott for the success of the offense. In the game against the Falcons, Prescott was 20-of-30 for 176 yards and had a rushing touchdown, but was sacked 8 times as the Cowboys fell 27–7.

Overall, Prescott finished his second professional season with 3,324 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 357 rushing yards, and six rushing touchdowns. This comes after Adam Schefter suggested in a halftime televised segment Friday that Prescott may not be 100 percent at all this season, and that the team has legitimate concerns about his health for the duration of the season. Coach Mike McCarthy suggested Prescott would be involved significantly more in practice as soon as this week, but it's still unclear if the signal-caller will make an appearance at all in the preseason. After Moore's injury, Prescott competed with second-year quarterback Jameill Showers for the backup job to established starter Tony Romo. Several reports from August training camp indicated that Showers outperformed Prescott, showing greater accuracy and a quicker release. However, the Cowboys coaching staff made the decision to start Prescott in the team's preseason opener at the Los Angeles Rams.
Working with the Cowboys' first-team offense, Prescott completed 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns in one half of action, though Dallas would lose the game 28–24. Prescott continued his hot streak throughout the rest of the preseason, impressing all with his veteran-like pocket poise and decision making. Despite being limited for the majority of camp, Prescott has resumed throwing, albeit on a "pitch count" as he works with some of his receivers.
Earlier this week, it was determined Prescott would not play in any of the remaining preseason games. Typically, a team will play a "dress rehearsal" game in their second-to-last preseason contest before the regular season, playing anywhere from one to two quarters before turning things over to the backups and roster bubble players. Since Prescott won't be partaking in any such dress rehearsal, Cowboy fans will have to wait until opening night for his much-anticipated return and a look at the complete first-team offense. Prescott began as the backup to Russell again in the 2013 season, but took over as the starter when Russell suffered a concussion.
He played in 11 games, completing 156 of 267 passes for 1,940 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was the MVP of the 2013 Liberty Bowl after leading the Bulldogs to a 44–7 win over the Rice Owls. His 2013 season performance ranks seventh in passing yards , tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns , and fourth in total yards and total touchdowns . Following the season, he was named to the 2013 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
With the season opener just days away, Prescott will be out there Week 1 at Tampa Bay a little more than 11 months removed from the devastating right ankle injury he suffered Week 5 of last season. Previously, this was a question mark due to the latissimus strain he sustained in his right throwing shoulder early in training camp, which sidelined him for the entire exhibition slate. Prescott progressed well throughout August, though, and recently relayed to Jori Epstein of The Dallas Morning News that he hasn't endured any discomfort since returning to practice Aug. 25. On Thursday, Prescott will have the usual suspects in the skill positions in the form of WRs Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup and RB Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott remained limited Wednesday, his third straight practice after missing nearly three weeks. McCarthy already said he won't play his starting quarterback in the final preseason contest, so the Week 1 matchup with Tampa Bay will mark Prescott's first game action since he suffered a season-ending ankle injury last October.
He should return to full practice participation long before the Sept. 9 season opener. In Week 5 against the New York Giants, Prescott suffered an injury to his right ankle, and was carted off the field. He completed 14 passes for 166 yards and an interception plus had a receiving touchdown before leaving. It was revealed that he had suffered a compound fracture and dislocation to his right ankle, and he underwent surgery the same night, ending his season. Prescott was placed on season-ending injured reserve on October 19, 2020.
This will be the first time he's thrown passes against defenders since injuring his shoulder in late July. While it's far from ideal to miss the entire preseason and nearly all of training camp on the heels of a season-ending ankle injury in 2020, Prescott looks on track to play Week 1 against the Buccaneers. A source said an MRI exam showed quarterback Dak Prescott's right shoulder is progressing, and there's an expectation he could practice this week in a limited fashion. There's also a goal of possibly utilizing Prescott in Saturday's third preseason game against Houston. McCarthy has said the third preseason game is normally the dress rehearsal, and if Prescott is going to play, this would be the contest. Prescott has thrown passes within the last week, which is an encouraging sign for not so much being available for a preseason game but the season opener against Tampa Bay.
Prescott finished his 2016 rookie regular season with a record 11 games with an over 100 NFL passer rating, breaking the rookie record of nine games set by Russell Wilson in 2012. He tied the Ben Roethlisberger 2004 rookie record of winning 13 games as a starter. His NFL passer rating of 104.9 broke Robert Griffin III's rookie record of 102.4 set in 2012. His 67.76% pass completion percentage broke the rookie record of 66.44% set by Ben Roethlisberger. In a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 18, 2016, Prescott, with an 88.9% completion percentage, broke the rookie single game record of 87.0% set by Mike Glennon in 2013. With the Cowboys finishing the season with a 13–3 record, the team clinched the NFC East title.
Prescott completed 24 of 38 for 302 yards, with a quarterback rating of 103.2, and three touchdowns and an interception. Despite his strong performance, the Cowboys lost 34–31, ending their season. After a spectacular rookie season, Prescott was selected to the Pro Bowl and named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, receiving 28 of 50 votes, beating out running back and teammate Ezekiel Elliott by 7 votes. He was also ranked 14th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017.
He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, becoming the second Cowboys quarterback to receive this award, joining Troy Aikman in 1989. He left open the possibility of playing in Dallas' Aug. 21 preseason game against the Texans, too. Entering the third of four preseason games, Cowboys leadership had tipped its hat to veteran journeyman Garrett Gilbert as Prescott's backup quarterback.
2020 seventh-round selection DiNucci was expected to be kept, even if in a practice squad spot as a developmental asset coach Mike McCarthy was loath to give up on. Then Gilbert lost a fumble against the Houston Texans and DiNucci threw three interceptions. Cooper Rush, competing against them, completed 10-of-12 pass attempts for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Prescott originally was scheduled for 7-on-7s in his first practice back with the team, but he ended up participating in 11-on-11s as well. News has remained positive in the week and a half since, including Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reporting Friday that the quarterback will be "full go" for Thursday's season opener at Tampa Bay. The shoulder injury limited Prescott's reps this summer after he completed his rehab from last year's injury, but he'll at least have CeeDee Lamb, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and Ezekiel Elliott helping him knock off any rust the first few weeks of the season.
